Nursey update

Our nursery/baby room is coming together quite nicely. When we were on vacation the first of April we finished clearing it out, painted it, set up the crib, and hung some of the prints we had. In the last few weeks we've continued to work on it, most of the big stuff is done, just little things remain.

Project number one was to sew ribbon loops (thanks for the idea Lynsey!) on the back of a baby quilt to hang over the crib. My mom actually made this quilt in 1979, two years before I was born. I distinctly remembering sleeping with it/playing on it during my childhood. I just bought some wide, white grosgrain ribbon at Michael's, cut five lengths of it, roughly the same size, evenly spaced them across the top, and then hand-sewed the loops to the backside. I didn't want to use my sewing machine since it's an older piece and I wanted the stitches to be loose enough to remove if I needed to. The curtain rod is really too long so Doug is going to shorten it.
Project number two was to cut fabric pieces from my stash and stretch them over embroidery hoops to hang over the changing table. Super cheap project because I already had the fabric and some of the hoops, but even the hoops I had to buy were less than $2. This project has probably been done a million times now, I first saw it on this Nursery Tour at Ohdeedoh (now Apartment Therapy Family) but it originally came from Purl Bee. I cut the fabric slightly larger than the hoop, trimmed off the really big parts, and hot glued the cut edges down to the back of the hoop. It's a cute, inexpensive decoration, plus the fabric can be changed and they're so lightweight they won't hurt baby if they fall off the wall.
Project number three was curtain hemming. We bought the curtains at Ikea when we went to Atlanta in April. They came with some iron-on hem stuff that sucked/did not work. So I set out to hem them myself, which took me a while and included me catching my index finger in the sewing machine needle, ouch. But they are finally done and while they aren't perfect they look nice and I doubt anyone is going to go measure the hems.

Project number four is mostly Doug. My grandmother gave me a chiffarobe that belonged to my great-grandparents when I moved out on my own. For the baby's room I painted it red (I think it's called Ladybug and it's from the Martha paint line at Home Depot). The doors used to have really old mirrors in them. Doug removed the mirror panels and replaced them with panels covered in cork. The middle door is just a piece of wood he cut to fit and I painted with gray chalkboard paint (from the Martha line at Michael's). Doug is still finishing up all but one of the drawers, which I need to line once he's done. The knobs are from Lowes. I had thought about using some fancy drawer pulls from Anthropologie from decided to wait and just use the less expensive Lowes option. I was able to hang the clothes we have inside, I think we should have enough room for baby clothes and socks in the whole piece.

My next crafty-project to finish is the yarn ball mobile. I covered styrofoam balls with yarn (and a dab of hot glue) and some craft store purse handles (the round parts) but I have yet to put the whole thing together. I still need to figure out exactly how to do it. I'm also covering this giant 'B' (for our last name) with yarn. It's kind of a pain to do because of the large wad of yarn and the curves of the letter, luckily, I've got until July to finish.

An updated & decorated space

We're in the process of doing some house updating and refreshing and cleaning and purging. I mean it is spring plus I'm also doing what I guess is called 'nesting'. It's still a little early to work on the baby room but since it's going to get hot quick around here and I assume later on I'll feel not as motivated we've started doing a few things.

Our office, aka the third bedroom, has housed our computer, books, files and other bits of randomness since we moved in. The wood paneling made the room really dark and dated but we couldn't decide if we wanted it painted or not. Finally we decided to do it and hired a painter. It took him three days to prime and paint but we are so happy with the results, it's so much lighter and brighter. Since we've lived in our house, I have used our second bedroom for a craft room but now it's going to be the baby's room. So I downsized a little and merged my craft room into the newly painted office. We moved the craft room items into the office, changed the light fixture and hung new curtains. There are still a few things I want to do like paint the pink bookshelf and frame and hang a few more prints but it's 95% done. I absolutely love it and want to hang out in there all the time now.

A crafty project

I pinned this project from Amanda at Wit & Whistle ages ago. I finally got around to completing it a few weeks ago. It's a super easy project and completely clever. The complete instructions are here. I did pretty much everything that she did, same mugs/pens. I used my sketch book for inspiration, as well as just trying something that I thought would look nice. Some of the designs I came up with aren't perfect, lines are a little messy or too thick/thin but I think it adds to the character. When I was first testing the pens out I kept a moist paper towel besides me and if I messed up I immediately wiped off and dried the mistake and it was gone. I bought two pens, one in Anthracite (black) and one in Pewter (grayish silver). The black pen turned out better than the gray one (for me at least). To me the black pen gave more of a drawn-on look.

Thanks to Amanda for this crafty little project!

Making & baking via Pinterest

I heard about Pinterest a few months ago and was king of 'meh' about it. I didn't seek it out really and figured at some point I'd get interested. Then about a month or so again a friend sent me an invite so I finally joined. I'm still not a pin-aholic, but I do like the fact that it's a place I can gather all the things I want to bake/craft/knit, etc.

In the past few weeks I've made these things that I 'pinned'.

Glittered pumpkins via Martha Stewart. I used glitter and glitter glue from Martha's line at Michael's (thank you 40% off coupon). It was a pretty messy project because there is glitter everywhere, I'm pretty sure I have glitter in my bloodstream now. Also you had to be really careful to not touch the glue/glitter before it dried. I love the way they turned out though.

Felt leaf garland via A Beautiful Mess. This was incredibly easy to make since I ran them through my sewing machine instead of stitching them by hand. I just traced a leaf shaped pattern on a piece of copy paper, cut it out, pinned it to the felt sheet and cut them out by hand.

Chocolate Almond Oat bars from The Pastry Affair. These are delicious and could not have been more simple to make.
White Bean and Parmesan Baked Orzo from How Sweet It Is. A really good one-dish kind of dinner, even Doug ate it!?

Wonky Curtains

I sewed something, not very well though. I have wanted to make curtains for our kitchen door and kitchen window for ages. I looked at different fabric options and fell in love with some really cute Michael Miller prints (and I can't find now) but I couldn't justify spending the money. Instead I pawed around in the fabric stash I've been accumulating and decided to use fabric I bought last year when I went to San Antonio. The pattern is American Jane by Moda.

For the door curtains I used some lace at the bottom that I bought at an estate sale. There wasn't enough yardage left for the cafe curtains but I think that's okay. The seams are not really straight, but maybe no one will scold me. I'm just glad I had enough of an attention span to finish them. I'm sure there's a more proper way to make these, measuring and such, but being lazy and having a short attention span I just winged it.

What I accomplished this weekend

Taught my 7.5 year old niece to knit (I hope it sticks!)
My favorite thing was when my brother came to pick her up and we were getting her things together I asked her if she wanted to put her knitting in her bag and she said "No I'm going to knit in the car." A child after my own heart.
Made the same niece a little elastic waist skirt with fabric she picked out.
Finished the increase portion of my Damson shawl. The yarn is Malabrigo sock and the color reminds me of honey.
Wound one skein of yarn and made a giant mess with two other skeins after my swift fell apart.
Got Golden India takeout for dinner Saturday.
Went to the movies with Doug (saw this)
Read some of this Mary Gaitskill book.
Drank several glasses of iced Vanilla Chai from Memphis-based Ugly Mug while watching Lucas on the Indie Channel. Noted while watching said movie, Jeremy Piven in 1986 looks pretty much just like Jeremy Piven in 2010, but Charlie Sheen was way hotter in 1986.
Roasted okra from my garden (just a little olive oil, salt and pepper - yum!)

Crafty things

Inspired by this post at A Beautiful Mess, I put together a butterfly wreath yesterday. I used a foam wreath shape, some cream-colored acrylic yarn from my stash and feather butterflies from Michael's. I wanted to use the more realistic butterflies but couldn't find any. It took one episode of Big Love for me to wrap the wreath in yarn. I didn't want to glue anything onto the yarn itself so I can change it out if I want to. Instead I used some of my pearlized pins to pin the butterflies and a ribbon hook on the back. I think it turned out well, plus it's very spring-like.
I'm also working on a cross stitch project, the basic instructions came from the Subversive Cross Stitch book that was a birthday present last year. I took a little bit of screwing up for me to figure out how to do everything properly. The last cross stitch I ever did was when I was twelve, i.e. a super long time ago. The phrase is lyrics from a Mountain Goats song. It's a nice little activity to pick up between knitting projects.

Real! Tree!

Most of the time I try to plan things out but occasionally I get a whim and end up doing/convincing my husband, to do spur of the moments things. This was the case Saturday. So we put up our little tinsel tree last week and it was fine but I couldn't shake the disappointment of not having a real, actual tree. So Saturday morning as we're sitting in our pajamas drinking coffee I convinced him we should go buy a real tree, even though it's less than a week before Christmas. We went to the Schnuck's parking lot to purchase a little 5 1/2 foot-tall Norman Fir. It was a very painless process to un-decorate the old tree and relocate the ornaments to the new one. Plus it looks so.much.better. I love it. I keep sitting on the ottoman in the living room staring at it.In crafty news, I was inspired by Amanda at Bake It Pretty to make these little faux-cupcake ornaments. I used glitter instead of faux snow and my cupcake papers actually came from Bake It Pretty. I also forgot how when you use glitter it gets everywhere, usually in a spot on your forehead where it will stay for days, despite the fact that you shower regularly and wash your face.I know Christmas is mere days away and you probably have eight million things to bake and at least three people to still buy presents for and lots of uncomfortable family functions to sit through, but you should mix up a batch of this homemade hot chocolate, make yourself a mug of it and listen to David Sedaris's Santaland Diaries on NPR. It'll make you feel better, I promise.

It's beginning to look a little like Christmas

The tree is finally up, later than usual. We chickened out and opted to keep our little silver tinsel tree instead of going for a real full-sized one. Most of the ornaments are Seuss characters, with a few special ones scattered around. The "Oh The Places You'll Go" ornament is my personal favorite.
Our weekend was pretty low-key, Saturday morning I made Chocolate Chip pancakes (recipe here, it's Paula Deen but miraculously there's isn't a whole stick of butter involved).
Our friends had a Christmas party Saturday night and Lynsey and I decided to class it up by making a cocktail weenie tree, an idea found in this book. I made the base with an empty chicken broth can covered in wrapping paper and ribbon, a foam tree form, aluminum foil, glitter, toothpicks and a lot of hot-glue. Doug helped too, as he's a much better wrapper than I am. I think it turned out pretty awesome looking.
Sunday I did our Christmas cards, which I picked up from three different sellers on Etsy, The Black Apple, La Bella Couture and Letterary Press. They're headed out to their respective recipients today.
I cast-off that blasted Woodland Lace Shawl I've been knitting since July and found time to block it. I've never blocked a lace shawl so I'm hoping it doesn't come out looking too wonky...
Using some of my Seattle yarn loot, I cast on a little cable hat in Rowan Felted Tweed, I'm halfway done. It's only my second cable project but so far, so good. The brim is a little tight for my big noggin, but it's a wool blend so maybe it can be blocked a little to stretch it out.
